I agree. If ibm is going to increase their atention for linux why cant they use the logo already adopted by the community. when i think of a physical representation of linux i dont think of a little kid but of a happy, chubby penguin named tux :)

Damoek 04-19-2004 11:05 AM

either way, i think that the fact that IBM posted a superbowl commercial for liniux is fabulous. Think of how many non believers can be exposed now.

Gill Bates 04-20-2004 02:15 AM

they shoulda said boo sco too ;)

Damoek 04-20-2004 09:50 AM

Yeah, no doubt... I would definately like to see some more manstream bashing of the sco corporation. Just one negative ad, or anything really.

open source is great, and if there is an open-source alternative to a commercial product, i'll use it, but you have to live in a real world, not everyone can afford to live off donations, people have to make money.
If IBM or anybody else wants to sell a linux-based product or a product for linux, then that's great, they are just making more software available for linux, as long as it complies with the GPL and doesn't completely rape open-source software then more power to them.
corporations like IBM, Apple, they are good for open-source.
corprations like M$ who just want to dominate the market and muscle out everybody else are bad for open-source, the economy, and the general public.

Are you insane? Have you not forgotton IBM could give a rats ass about OSS? They are using Linux, but the applications they bundle with their linux servers are NOT open source. The server monitoring software, bandwidth load balencing software, etc.

Same with apple, itunes is not OSS, ichat is not OSS, appleworks (is that on osx?) is not oss

And everyone seems to forgot IBM was the microsoft of the 80's, they had a hold on the market, they were proprietary as hell (until pheonix reverse engineered their bios chip :O ) etc etc..

The apple 1984 superbowl commercial with "big brother" , you know who that big brother guy talking, and all the people blindly following in that commercial was representing? IBM

IBM is not a hero, they do not care about OSS.

It is a good advertising point to tout the source availability of linux and how you can do what you want with it. That is a way to get corps to buy your linux solutions, and IBM is using this to their advantage. This does not mean they care about OSS at all, it's just a selling tactic.

Once a evil monopoly, ALWAYS an evil monopoly.

One day someone will superceed microsoft and then we'll all be praising microsoft, lord help us! :P

Regardless, Linux success; commercial or otherwise, is nothing but good for the open source community. The more users, the more software and hardware support we get. I am wondering if you might be insane. IBM's Linux solution is still just that: Linux. The fact that they also include software that is not open source has nothing to do with it. Not all software can be free and open. Adobe doesn't give a damn about open source, but that wouldn't stop me from buying their products if they produced a native Linux version. Apple and IBM both absolutely support open source. They are also trying to make a living doing it. Best of luck to them I say.

I would like to be a paid Linux sys admin, and while companies are comming around, they don't want Slackware or Gentoo and the like. The want a commercial release like Redhat to get vendor support and someone to sue when things go wrong. Thats where people like IBM come in and I am glad to see it.

Check out some of the free info IBM publishes on Linux at IBMDeveloperWorks sometime. It is fast becomming one of my favorite sites.

Yes, they help open source, I agree, but they shouldn't be trusted is what I'm saying.

They won't let nothing come between them and their bottom line.

IBM may not be directly helping OSS, But by showing the world that it trusts OSS, and believes in it, its giving linux the publicity and a good name.
