Richard Stallman? ...Oh...I see from Wikipedia that he invented the GNU GPL. ...[reading his bio] Ugh. Being the advocate of freedom that he is, I don't suppose he'd mind my opining that the GNU is nice but he personally is an eccentric old crank who takes his anti-materialism further than necessary. I usually haven't owned a cellular telephone myself (I did once recently, but it worked for only a few months), and am a frugal person (I would admire Ralph Nader's having worn the same pair of shoes for decades, if I didn't believe that was myth), but, geez...he lived on campus for many years, as this says? At least it implies that he finally got himself his own residence.
I think Richard Stallman is a pretty cool guy, eh lives on campus for several years and doesn't afraid of anything. And he also wrote great amounts of the GNU system.
Newbiesforever, you should be careful with what you say about Stallman. Don't forget that he's a sensible guy in many ways, despite his cockin' on campus for several years.

Reason: watch the language, kid ...
?? Um...I've learned my lesson about complaining about other people's crude statements, Patrickmay, but that befuddled me. Was there a point to spouting off obscenities there?
And I read in the Wikipedia article that Stallman wasn't paid for his GNU-related work at MIT, either. He might as well make one of his two-hour speeches on which is more is line with his philosophy: begging for food, or digging through dumpsters.
That gives me a thin pretext for reprinting one of the jokes in my old Anti-Macintosh Manifesto. Back when I was still using Windows 3.1, and hadn't found out that Microsloth cribbed the Trash Can concept from Apple starting with Windows 95, I wrote in this piece, "A Macintosh user who is exploring the Skid Row of cyberspace can click on his Trash Can icon and find an addressless cyberpunk foraging inside for unwanted scraps of data."

Hm... I don't trust anyone willing to work for free. Sorry. I just assume they have ulterior motives. Bill Gates you can trust so long as you accept he just wants your money.
I don't necessarily have a specific problem with Stallman, just commenting in the philosophical sense.

Whom, I? If so: nope, I questioned that guy's obscenities because they accomplished nothing other than to make him look ridiculous, and I posted that quotation from my Anti-Macintosh Manifesto because it was funny. Why, are you looking for someone to flame? Try the nothing-to-do-with-Linux forum; you'll probably find someone.

So what is there to recommend someone's petty nitpicking and snap judgements on a subject they admit they are not familiar with?
I think your, "Being the advocate of freedom that he is, I don't suppose he'd mind my opining that the GNU is nice but he personally is an eccentric old crank..." is not a bad beginner summation but your followup is very weak. Maybe you will want to try again when you know more about the subject.
On the contrary. I'm not snarling at you here; I didn't say PENIS as an act of aggression; it's just something I do. I mean, I think it's funny to say PENIS in all capital letters.
I hope I didn't offend you.
Nah...I just laughed at you. In this thread, you make someone yelling the F-word look dignified.

I think I won't try again. It was a mostly instinctive reaction to him. I feel the same disgust for him if I give it much thought, but I'll cheerfully back off after this thread. I'm sure the greater Linux community can be trusted more than Stallman to respect someone's right to payment (if they want it) for the software they write.
