Talking I just crashed vi!


Now that doesn't happen often. Running on HP-UX.

How'd you do that? Are you sure it wasn't vi or just the terminal or console you were running on?

Actually it didn't crash in the end. I was searching through a very large file and at one point it hung up for ages: so long that I thought it had crashed, but control did return eventually, after a few minutes. My bad!

lol... I'm sure it is possible to crash... I've never seen it. I did have X crash once ... taking vi down with it. I was able to recover the file though.

And I am sure that some implementations are not written as well as others. So anything is possible.

So what if you can crash vi... Vi is only a simple text editor. You arent any better than I am.. I crashed MSWord millions of times.. Beat that....

Yes, but crashing vi is a rare event. Crashing Word is something of a "dog bites man" story. Not a very exciting headline!

I had a hard drive that went farming (literally the head lost power on long seeks and went crashing into the platter destroying everything it hit at random).

But hardware burning up and dying isn't software.
