Hypermail port for Windows

Hello,

Does anybody know if it is possible to port Hypermail to Windows?
(Building Hypermail on WIN32)

I know that in the Hypermail website there is a procedure, using Cygwin, for compiling hypermail in Windows. The problem is, that procedure is really confusing, and indeed it has mistakes. For whatever reason, the guy who wrote it, makes an unnecessary deviation to C++, and on top of that, the examples that he include just doesn't work, not in Linux, not in Windows.

I would like to know if there somebody out there has written a simpler procedure, or better, a simple port, for those who doesn't have the patience to run a very loooong and confusing process which starts by installing Cygwin, and eventually might end with running Hypermail using a Cywin driver....

THank you for your help!

Hi,

As far as I know the guide I'm about to mention isn't linked to in the main Hypermail site, so I thought I'd mention it here as it may be helpful to you and to others with the same problem as you.

I would suggest that you read Building Hypermail for Windows using MinGW. As the name states, it's a guide to build Hypermail on Windows with MinGW. This means that the resulting binaries are native Windows binaries, i.e. they will run on any Windows PC without the need for any additional DLLs.

The author provides a patch to port Hypermail to Windows so that you can build it on MinGW in the first place (one of the first things he does is guide you through applying the patch). It's all pretty much well explained so it should be easy to follow even for an inexperienced user. He even tosses in some usage examples to get you started.

Hope that helps.

Thank you !!! :-)

I have checked it, and it is exactly what I was looking for. It seems that one has to install MinGW (Minimalist GNU for Windows, an Open Source project) first, in order to build the "windows installer", but it is a great thing that the binaries are really Windows and one does not need to use Cygwin DLLs or others to run the program. On the other hand, installing MinGW (download and instructions here: http://mingw.org/download.shtml ) is pretty straight forward.

The "Using Hypermail" guide and examples in the link you provided, are simply great.

I know it may sound unpleasant mentioning the word "Windows" in a Linux Forum, but I am sure that many Linux enthusiasts and even Linux evangelists, still have to use that infamous OS, for example, at work, or even at home, because perhaps they have already invested money in certain software, or because other people at home use the same PC and need the Redmont OS, etc.

Bringing great Open Source projects like "Hypermail" to the Windows users, is certainly a very good step forward to show them how important it is for the World, that *Free as-in-Freedom* software keeps growing, evolving and changing for better the World, and how the GNU/Linux community really contributes to the advance of the knowledge and technologies without any "hard feelings" towards an old, selfish, poor quality, monopolist and decadent "Proprietary" system that keeps investing millions in a dirty war to destroy Open Source.

Thanks again, staticmicro, and thanks to Capi for his Building Hypermail for Windows guide and great procedure.
