How to save and use a SIM card image

Hello!
I've read somewhere about an USB device which can copy inside itself the content of some SIM cards, and then save them all inside another SIM card, which can be used on a mobile phone to switch between the original SIMs.
I liked the idea, so I decided to try and write a program to do something like that :D So I need to know how SIM cards work (well, how mobile phones work) and how I can read their content.
Any help is appreciated..!
Thanks!

I just googled sim card reader and it came up with quite a few hits for pre produced readers. I didn't get into them much so I don't know how much you can edit. But most of them were able to store phone book entries and possibly some other date for the +$10 readers.
