Question how to gain traffic to my site?

hi,

i want to ask this question but befor i do i arnt intending to spam and pleas dont ban me from the forum for asking this questin like they did at linuxforums.org!!!

my question is how can i get more people to my site (gain more traffice to my web site) without spamming? is there a way?

i have put a forum on it but the problem is it could look good but if there isnt a steady flow of posters coming on it it will be one of those sites where you go on it and dont go back!

if you are a moderator and do class this as spam can you just please edit the question for me so it isnt spam! but please dunt ban me for asking this is i dont class it as spam i class this as a question, and i will even leave my web address out unless if some one does ask for it, that way you cant say im spaming hopefully

thanks for any good ways you may come up with

It's simple: Make it good. LQ.org does not spam and it's extremelly active with a huge, really huge number of users.

If you site has good content, eventually peoples will hit you from search engines and tell a friend, recommend links, etc. Now if you lack content and just want it to be popular by spamming, please don't even create a web-site. Since Dreamweaver (and most important, dreamweaver cracks) appeared, every little kid out there has a crappy website on the net with "Page under Constructions" and bad content. The net is a big mess thanks to them... As an old said:

"If you've nothing smart to say, just shut up..."

this fits for websites as good as gloves to hands...

thanks, the site has some content but not a lot yet, its just having the time to do it between college, home work, and my girl friend. i know this web site doest spam well it doesnt need to spam as its got a very larg user base.

and as for Dream weaver hu!! i hate it i much rather write the code myself with the aid of the gimp or adobe (depending wether im at home or college) for the all the graphics.

i will try and get some intresting content though, as have wanted to put a few linux and web design totorials on thier but its just having the time to write them

thanks for the tip though

One good way is to sign up with Google AdWords and Adsense. (Adwords will put your ads on other people's sites and Adsense will put ads on your site).

Also submit your search terms effectively in many search engines (always read the policy of the search engines carefully before submitting)!

And above all, put your link on signatures in forums like these

Thanks for the reply too and LOL. Yeah, I need to update that list someday . But that's true, I still use Win 3.1 in an old compaq I have (386/8RAM) and it has Grey Cat Linux, Dos 6.22 and Win 3.1 on it. I simply love playing around with old, really old machines like that, installing OS's and classics as Prince of Persia and Castlevania... ghehe.

I'm glad to know you don't like Dreamweaver. I personally use it for quickly visualize how the site will look like, draw tables and change colors quickly. But when it get down to doing something, HTML is the way to go. Also, if you mix PHP or any other scripting language, it's good to be in full control of the code .

And great tips by Harishankar, by they way
