How to compose a Chinese name?

One chinese name is composed of one 'last name'(family name) and one 'first name'. You should know that the last name of a Chinese name should be the first and the first name can be one Chinese word or two Chinese words. For instance, a chinese name '成龙' is composed of '成' as the last name and '龙' as the first name while a chinese name '李小龙' is composed of '李' as the last name and '小龙' as the first name. Few last names consists of two words like '独孤'.

What kind of Chinese name do you like? A two words name like '成龙' or a three words name like '李小龙'?

Forgive my ignorance, but aren't Chinese written words phonetic? If so, it might take more than one word to make up a phonetic name, right? Wrong? I dunno.
