How many russian-speaking/originating geeks are here
I was browsing the Software forum, and I picked a thread regarding Cyrillic fonts in linux, and now I am wondering how many ppl are here with Russian/former USSR background? As a matter of fact I am from Ukraine.
Well teh Ukrainian is more inclined towards Polish, I know for a fact most people who don't know Ukrainian but speak Russian (whose Russian is first language for that matter) have hard time understanding Ukrainian, on the other hand, I haven't yet met any Ukrainian-only speaking person who won't understand Russian though.
I am russian, but I live in f**king Lithuania.
Vse rodstvenniki v Rossiji, a zdes nikogo. A tak hocetsia obratno na Rodinu voobshem perebivajemsia po nemnogu )))

If you were to teach your children Ukranian but not Russian and stay in the US. Am I right in thinking that they probably would have the same problems understanding Russian as Russians does Ukranian ?
Presumably Ukranians understand Russian because of political reasons rather than linguistic reasons as in the same way welsh speaking people are fluent in English despite Welsh having less in common with English than French or German.
