Also you can tell us more info, like which distro you installed, and whether or not the user was computer-savvy.

I helped 4 people switch, all to Slackware, two are savvy, two aren't (so I do all the admin for them, but swaret makes that easy).

I want to switch my parents but mum uses accounting software that doesn't run in linux or with Crossover so I'm still working. Maybe dual-boot one day but I don't know.

I let people ask me if they want to use it... I talk about the wonders of Linux and if they are interested I'll throw them a LIVE cd or two (I have about a million layin around...)

Who: My mother, step-mother, and sister.

Operating system: All using FreeBSD (okay, it's not Linux but they wouldn't be able to tell you that).

Computer-Savvy: NO! Not at all... example, my mother needed help understanding the concept of drag and drop. My step mother had no clue her computer could play videos or music. My sister is best of all... and she barely passed a computer test in high school where she had to use Word (this was before the conversion... OpenOffice actually helped her grades improve there).

All of these have been using it 100% of the time, on their computers which I am not physically near to help with very often, for well over a month. With the exception of the drag and drop issue... I have had one problem. I drove 45 minutes to find out my Step-mother's digital camera was not working because she had not turned it on.

Each and every one of them has reported an increase in things they can do with their computers and an increase in the ease of use. My step-mother even wants me to show her how to edit sound and video on her computer so she can make little movies of her grandson for family members. This is the same woman who, less than two months ago, didn't know her computer could even play multimedia.

I'd like to help someone switch, but I don't want to spend the time tweaking and configuring and cussin' at their machines too!

two, both don´t know anything about linux and not much about windows. i admin them via ssh until they get a grip (which is happening). i also sometimes give them crash courses when i visit them. i chose debian in order to match their wishes (i have told them to use their imagination in what they want, that way i can learn, too since i am quite lazy to configure my home box)

So far, one guy. Currently he's dualbooting RHEL/XP. He knows a little about computers (not too much though, he once asked me if he could send the MS Office kit to someone else through...e-mail, not joking), but I often get questions from him when he's in troubles.
And I almost talked in another one, the next step is to go over his place with a Knoppix CD to actually introduce him to Linux.

i am in the process of migrating 6 people and i am writting up a proposal for my town to switch. i am going to try to start with the library but it all has to be presented to my town council.

0 and I don't plan to! I like it when people do stuff on their own! I don't want to force somebody to try linux and tell them lies like it's the most secure os or some other linux myths!

If they want it, then they can try it out!

Most people I know are almost computer illiterate. They seem to be happy if their windows machine starts up and they are able to email and msn chat.

The last person I tried to have a conversation with about computers did not understand the concept of "operating system" let alone linux.

I gave a workmate a live cd to use but he has never used it.

I gave my niece a computer and set up a dual boot linux/windows situation. Good thing I installed windows. They only have dialup and linux does not support the dialup modem. Have you tried to find a compatible modem lately? So, linux loses again ...

So, no, I rarely discuss linux and I make no efforts to promote it among my circle of relatives and acquaintances. I did at one time but found it a lost cause.

In real life I've converted every computer in my house to Linux. That's around 8 computers. But, only 2 people, my brother and mom. My dad does not use computers much, but he can use a laptop with Linux on it to do basic things.
