How many converts do you have today???

To steal a line from Mel Brooks:

"How many converts do you have today???"

I, just this weekend, converted my neighbor from M$ XPee to SuSE Linux on her Dell desktop PC. The machine was not working well due to viruses, adware, spyware, and assorted other crap her grandchildren put opn the machine.

Now she has a machine that can do everything she was looking to do,... surf the web, get and send e-mail, word process and play the occasional lite game...

Her (teenage) grandkids now have their own accounts to muck up as they please...

The hardest part of the process was bringing over her old files off an XPee machine that wasn't cooperating and making them read-able in Linux (WordPerfect files made readable by a combination of libwpd and kword). Dell also likes to nerf their HDs by putting this little 30 MB partition in the begining of the drive that stores a couple of files... thereby cutting the available number of active primary partitions to three. So you end up playing a shell game with apps like partition commander.

SuSE's installer was a little mis-colored. But after that, the system responds well and even gets between 400-500 FPS in glxgears with an Intel 810 graphics chipset at 1024x768 24-bit resolution. I had to deactivate teh processes for the sound chipset and re-activate them to get them to work,... and SuSE was a little skittish about giving me read access to her NTFS partition. But all in all, it was a satisfying convertion.

moved to general - not really a Linux-question.

1 person how now uses Linux full-time (except for games), 1 person who barely uses it ;-)
edit: Sorry. Not today. That's my lifetime ;-)

3 at work. 4 of my friends. I guess 7 altogether. Oh, forgot completely. Today also 1 person at work. Passed him 3 CDs of Mandrake (Best for Newbies):p

Hmmm,...

Seems we are taking the market share away from M$,... one desktop at a time...

By the way,... my neighbor was VERY impressed with SuSE;
"You mean I don't have to bother with that spy-ware and anti-virus stuff??" she asked...

She was able to use stuff just fine, and all her hardware worked right after installation.

According to survey at our institution folks get really p##ed off with M$ for security failures

Ive set up a 2nd partition and Mandrake on a couple of peoples PC. My friend uses his PC for school and cant afford for it to go down so I said if he has trouble with Windows he can always boot to his Mandrake partition and continue to work, same thing with another guy at the gym I work out at. He has to work from home and he cant afford for his PC to be down so I setup a 2nd partition for him with Mandrake and likes the fact that he can move his Excel files over and continue to work should something bad happen.

My family is a bunch of ingnorant fools, they won't even consider Linux.
One of my brothers wants to use Linux, but needs games, now I've run Warcraft through Wine and so I'm going to try to convert him.
And another brother wanted to once or twice, but I told him not to because my mom would be
nasty pissed *at me*if he did.

Hey guys! I've got another one today. Just by chance he came to my place to pickup "collectors edition" of Windoze 95 fat32, and saw me working on net. Question by question, answer by answer he got interested and I gave him to try Gnoppix. I know he'll be coming back for more serious stuff:cool:

Currently 2. One guy from my church (Windows was giving too much problems with hardware) and my aunt (First PC), both with Kurumin (Live-cd).

I converted probably about 20 PCs with our F/OSS club in my hometown. Personally converted one accountancy company and one restaurant to Linux. I coould not convert any of my friends, because all of them are heavy gamers, so it's impossible at the moment :)

Working on my wife right now, have not completed the task yet, still ned to figure out some software stuff.

And I got my mom, minus the fact that I coldn't get the dial up to work. But when I go home next year I'll fix it. Guess I suck at converting people.
