How long does the mozilla compile?

I started around midnight, and it's almost 2 in the morning - still going
AMD 850 MHz, 512 Mb SDRAM, 2 Maxtor HDD's - ATA100 but on primary IDE channel hence ATA66 40 GB 7200 RPMs, and ATA66 8.2 GB 5600 RPM's.
How far will it go?

neo77777 07-02-2002 01:00 AM

Ok at 2 in the morning I got
Code:

/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.85708: line 111:  7393 Segmentation fault

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=`pwd`:`pwd`/.. MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=`pwd` ./regxpcom

error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.85708 (%install)

It was another experiment to compile mozilla using source rpm.
Time to go to sleep.
Bye-bye

Can I laugh? Is that okay?

I have been there, compiling X, or mozilla, then getting an error right at the end. You have to laugh. Really you do.;)

Sorry.

May I suggest trying to compile using source .tar.gz, it still takes a while, I made it about 50 mins.

When you do compile it try using a light weight window manager, and stop all unessential services, you may just be able to squeeze more juice from the box that way.

Best of luck next time around. :)

Yeah, that's what I did for the rest of the night, I laughed my arse off. 2 hrs wasted - so dumb, oh well next time. BTW, when I was compiling it I used the lightest ever window manager - none, pure runlevel3, because I just compiled new kernel -2.5.24, and my NVIDIA drivers must've been recompiled, but for some reason I decided to compile mozilla first, and I was posting it using lynx :-)
The next shot would be on mozilla tar.gz
Thanks for support mate.

I am on my second shot to compile mozilla 1.0 from source (tar.gz), will see what happens, so far it looks the same as yesterday's attempt - already going for an hour.

well my source compile of moz apparently took up 1.2Gb, and i never could suss out how to actually install the program and get rid of the source code. it seemed quite insistant that it was gonna stay exactly where it was.

I do kernels on this machine in about 3 minutes... here's Mozilla 1.1a:

make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/bob/mozilla/embedding/browser/gtk/tests'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/bob/mozilla'

real 50m51.504s
user 42m40.370s
sys 3m38.440s

Athy 1.2, 768Mb of SDRAM, Slack 8.1:

Bloody long time!

Cheers,

Finegan

I'd say it was awesomely f....ing crappy! Danm, it took nearly two hours again, and on top of it I just got rid off the source code - no go afterwards. Danm.
Whatever - lynx rules.

No kidding, I posted before right after the compile. The make install took another three minutes... a 3 minute install from one part of the hard drive to another? And it bogged out! I could of spent that time doing something useful, like cleaning my earwax!

There is a really good hint at the LFS site on how to compile mozilla. It may be of interest to you. But Mozilla is so sloooooooow, especially compared to galeon, but you need moz for galeon. Strange....

On the off subject, is anyone getting odd X-lockups using Opera 6.01? It just breaks X, reads a bunch of zombies in ps , which I'm able to get to just by remote logging into the machine. I'm using the QT static version on the KDE 3.0.1 of Slack 8.1.

Cheers,

Finegan

Man, I wonder when will the real browser for linux show up? Besides lynx :D, now I've screwed up the system such that galeon is getting messy. I put for now original rpms from CD's, can't even use up2date to get newest RH mozilla which is 0.9.9 in order to get galeon 1.2, the deps error out on gcc, I have 3.1.17, and up2date wants its crappy 2.96, oh well experimenting, experimenting - I want my LFS !!! I've faild it once, I guess the best platform to build it on would be slack.
