How long?

How long before I cease to be a newbie and get the "member" moniker?

taz.devil 02-13-2002 08:08 PM

I believe it's 35 or 40 posts, one of them is it.

isajera 02-14-2002 12:16 AM

from where you are now, two more posts... unless jeremy's changed it since i was there.

Thymox 02-14-2002 06:28 AM

But do you really want to have the 'Member' moniker? I'm on 500+ posts and I still consider myself a newb on many aspects of Linux. Hell, I'm over 1/2 way to being 'Guru', and I'll be buggared if I'm 1/2 way to being a guru.

So I guess the answer is probably 30. Only 970 more 'till guru... but most people moderator out first.

There should be an intermediate step... like uber-troll, overly loquatious, Slackware user, extremely bored at work/school, or post-junkie. I think this one makes 550 posts for me and I still can't configure Samba. I just bothered to hook up a printer to a Linux box for the first time the other day. Wow, I just realized... its been 1 year and a day since I first installed the uber-buggy RedHat 7.0 on my first Linux box.

I think I'm going to have a moment.

Yeah, right... well anyway; The point I was getting to was that no matter what you learn, there's always something nifty out there to try. I've got a friend with a stack of P1 133's. I mean a stack, like 6-7. I keep threatening to build a cluster, or possibly a render farm... okay really just an orchard maybe.

550 posts... 100 about nothing at all: my preference in cheese etc., at least 100 about how to win a fight with X, 50+ about LFS, another 100 about how to kick the snot out of an ethernet card, invariably either a tulip or an rtl8139 which is why I buy a lot of 3com, 50 more or so on how to make apache do what you want, another 50 about sendmail... that of course never solves a problem but makes the guy know that he's not alone: everyone hates sendmail, maybe another 50 on how to properly break an old laptop, and another 50 or so about how not to pour picklejuice on your processor, fry eggs on your athlon (which you can do), or not to try and mount a music CD.

Yeah, I'm a newbie too.

Cheers,

Finegan

trickykid 02-15-2002 01:14 PM

i just noticed i have surpassed yet now 3000 ( looks down and has a brief moment thinking, god, i need a life ), it would take me days to go thru and find out how many are worthless posts and such... but i bet probably a good 500 posts alone by me mentioned to run Xconfigurator...to configure X on redhat that is. :D

isajera 02-15-2002 01:19 PM

i moded out with about 50 posts left... that kinda chaffed a bit... i think DavidPhillips and kewp are the only ones who were ever gurus before they got the mod nod.

looks like aussie is the next up-and-coming guru... five bucks says he mods out in the distro forum.

yep.. i think i modded out about 20 or 30 posts before i became a guru.. but now i am just Lord Master of Post according to Finegan.. :D

- add another one to the total discussing the number of posts -

taz.devil 02-15-2002 04:03 PM

Only because it seems to be the proper thing to do with this thread, I had to post. This gives myself also yet another post that out of 600 sum posts, I think 25 might be of true value. So what do we say? 400 more posts and i'll be a guru, now that doesn't necessarily mean linux-wise, because we all know that ain't true, but I will gladly say I am a guru of crap. I have my B.S. (Bull Shi*) degree and am quite proud of the fact that I can make anything sound 100 times more important than it really is! And for my funny freind finegan, a great Geruggh Flugosh Eeguhh to you and your great uber-troll idear! :D

Unfortunately, I'm worse off: B.A. English. Certifiably worthless. More moniker thoughts: anyone with an average word count per post of 100+: Dickens-troll. Anyone that posts 50%+ in security: Orwell disciple. Anyone that talks about their distro as if it has a personality: Jungian. Those guys that go on about their distro above all other and how even Slack should embrace RPMs, blah blah blah: Kipling post-colonial imperialist. The rare few guys whose posts seem to be knowledgable, on-topic, and yet totally un-followable: beat hacker.

Stop me before I deconstruct the textuality of my own post like some over-caffenated undergrad.

Man, a 14 hour nap hits the spot. Fliberdyboo!

A note to Linuzrulz: my apologies, but you must know that a thread started in General tends not to stay on topic past the third follow-up. Actually, it may be a requirement. I think Kewp will close the thread if its showing any continuity past 10.

Cheers,

Finegan

CragStar 02-16-2002 06:01 PM

There's more than one mod around here, and unlike kewp........... I take keep-post-alive bribes. ;)

But don't let anyone know.........DOH!

I reckon that my first 20 post were actually useful, trying to get a winmodem to work. After that, well, let me put it this way. I'm a moderator, but I reckon that there are plenty of ppl here who know more about Linux than I do. A hell of a lot more.

But I love this site. Nothing beats the Linux community.

acid_kewpie 02-16-2002 06:21 PM

i don't remember saying i didn't take bribes...

actually i don't believe i've EVER pertained to having any morals of any sort... :D

I was a guru, and i really didn't like it, as soon as i was a guru, and i got a single thing wrong, people started going "oh, some guru you are..." when i never asked for the bloody title in the first place. so i changed my name to bluecadet, and started a new. then got made a mod and came back to this name as i wasn't a guru anymore, and felt less under pressure. still thinking about bribing jeremy to copy those 550 posts over... :D

*start quoting me here*
I doubt i'm the only one that realises I know sh*t about linux in the grand scheme of things as many of you will concede.
*finish quoting here*
*write I AGREE here*
I mean well in general tho. and i'm learning. seeing as how I didn't get the systems programming job i went after I instead get to concentrate a damn site more on teaching myself to be a sysadmin. first step Perl, then NIS then BIND i think.

I STILL haven't had a useful solution to my first post here... really really odd problem... X would only load if my pci modem was conected if not, black screen.... so odd.

hehe, i'm fairly confident i'll be with the "tumbleweed and me" forum for a fair while if not ever! best place for me maybe. except when I wanna close a thread like that troll one on newbie a few hours back. dammit rachel where are you? having a life????

oh and in advance, i'll prolly be absent pretty much for a month or so maybe whilst i'm between houses once i finish uni, and living with the girls folks, who don't want to get cable.... net cafe here i come...

oh and i hereby declare i EASILY have the besst name on this site. by miiiiiiiiiiiles. nearest contender i'd say was (is?) Colonel Panic, but there's too much KFC in it for me...

finegan 02-16-2002 10:17 PM

Now I get it! I missed the whole thing. That makes total sense.

hmmm... browsing, reading, posting, and moding on a saturday night... yeah... i've got me a life. :)

unfortunately, i don't seem to have the super-mod-like vigilance that kewp does. he must have some sixth sense that goes off like a beacon when the trolls and denziens of the internet try to sully the good name of his forum. i can just see him, in the middle of a restaurant... "hmm... somethings amiss on LQ - i must get connectivity now!!!"

soon... we're going to have to start throwing online wakes for users and mods who, after finally and painfully making their way into our little community here, throw all their hundreds of posts away by getting a life... like jamie...
cinnix was another of my faves that disappeared a few months ago.

i was chatting with tricky when that particular neuron fired... the little twerp never bothered to actually tell me. i think blue already had a couple hundred posts by then too. in my mind, kewp had been missing for weeks - i thought he was another online funeral in the making.

taz.devil 02-16-2002 10:30 PM

But what if this IS our life? Then we don't need to get one, as nothing else matters, yeah?! My posts obviously don't support this theory for me, but i'm home everyday bashing on the keyboard, trying to get something right that, in the end I find the answer was a two character command. So, philosophically speaking, LQ is the umbilical and Linux is my life. Now all of that said, the only real thing i've accomplished is adding another post to my count and making people staring at thier screens say, "What a freak!" Well, that's ok, cause if you're reading this and actually got to the end...You know the rest!

hey... don't get me wrong... i love this site. it's the only thing that keeps me sane at work sometimes. i'm just trying to keep from getting overly-existential and the postulating-about-what-life-outside-of-linux would be like. if i didn't have this, i'd probably be doing something equally geeky and antisocial. this is definitely my favorite online site, by far. i really believe that life is just doing what you enjoy doing. being a part of this particular community is part of my life - and it's actually one of the things i enjoy most. it's always hard to explain that to someone on the outside tho... and i guess the language i use on everyone else spills over a bit onto my posts here. it's hard to have a good cerebral relationship with anyone you know personally, but it's really easy online.

I just woke up and read my post and your reply and feel bad! At the time it wasn't meant to sound so condescending (sp?). I appologize for that and if you or anyone else took it personally. I got off on a tangent there and really wasn't mad or frustrated at all. I was just typing and that's what came out. Sowwy...

Wait a minute! Who are you calling scummy? :D

And speaking of which, Star Wars 2 will be out soon. I am SO excited!

And BTW- Isa, I also found out about Bluecadet being Acid_kewpie from talking to Tricky. You think he could like send out a memo or something :)

hey, you could at least actaully go do the "behind his back" thing BEHIND rather than INFRONT of me... :D

star wars 2. that looks so crappy. i thought the name was soooooo bad, but the clone wars were mentioned in A New Hope, so you gotta let them off for that i guess. but the trailer is just sloppy trite. I don't care how many times anakin looks at amedala and what color brown robe he's wearing at the time...

GUNS! BOMBS! ROCKETS!

incidentally, if you didn't know, Darth Vader spent much of the 80's as the Green Cross Code man, touring UK schools teaching kids how to cross the road. no shit.

Hmmm, I feeling like buying a cape and mask just so i can't rip them off and go...

Aight, Someone has to ask Jeremy to build a chat room soon or General is going to have to come with a FAQ. For Instance:

Q: Why is it that the Threads in General never seem to stay on topic?

That would be the transitional nature of the Posts here, where the beginning of the post is related somehow to the original note, but then sidesteps into an entirely different topic somehow related to something else. The transition does not have to be subtle, and usually occurs near paragraph breaks.

Why exactly is it that George Lucas thinks he's good enough to direct his own films? Ep 5, Empire, easily the darkest of the 4 so far, and in my slouch opinion the best, George kicks back and produces while letting Kirshner do his job. Ep 6, George gets a little more involved after letting Kershner slip in the line, "Then I'll see you in hell," and what do we get?

As Kevin Smith put it: A bunch of muppets.

I want to see this spot of dialogue for Ep 2:

Mace: Hand me my lightsaber.

Anikin: Which one is it?

Mace: The one that says 'Bad Mother@#&%er on it'.

Okay, maybe I'm all alone in wanting Tarantino to direct Ep 3, but someone, anyone else: Kevin Smith, Ivan Reitman, even Jerry Zucker could do a better job.

Oh my, today I've posted about Quake 3 and Star Wars on a Linux forum. Can I have my geek merit badge now?

Cheers,

no. you need a monty python one too. and in the uk, you additionally require a Red Dwarf one.

Ok, a Tarantino Ep 3 would scare me too much, although it would probably be killer! Anyhow, I believe Jeremy keeps the geek badges in his comp. desk's belly-drawer. I'm waiting for nomination myself. :(

Wew, well i'm glad i'm not the only Fraggle Rockian! As for Red being a babe, well, I understand those feelings too. I've seen some hot cartoon characters. ;)
That link cracked me up though, lol. I had no idear there was an actual structure to bork, or that it was even called that. :) I cracked up trying to read the links and buttons.
As for the Red Dwarf movie, I don't know why, but I am optomistic about it. Especially since they are using the original actors aside from stand-in wannabees. I guess we'll see...

You know, for how often people post, I don't think i've ever seen the user page option used? Is it an IM type system? Gotta get those posts up I spose, I want to become a guru and then lead all the newer members astray as to provide a guru scapegoat for the rest.

A java client?? god no! personally i'd recommend just starting a room on a server like chatjunkies.org and just giving a reference for it... XChat rox.

isajera 02-20-2002 01:37 AM

anyone here think a chat might take away from lq some? ...course, threads like THIS one would be long gone :), fallen into the void of unlogged chats.

ummm... second thought... would that be a bad thing? :) maybe we could just have a mod chat. (and select invited members :))
