How do I set up remote access through a router?

I'm somewhat of a novice at linux, and definitely a novice at networks. We've got a linux server at the office that I want to access from home, but both home and office machines are connected to the outside world through routers.

How do I set up the router(s) so that I can access from home? I've been given a static IP, which I assume I should assign to the office router. What other steps do I need to take to get going?

port forwarding

You will indeed need to give the router the static IP. Then find out what port the server software uses and set the router's port forwarding to direct all traffic destined for that port to the internal IP address of the computer that is running it. Look in your router's user guide for detailed instructions on how to configure port forwarding.

hope this helps,

Hello M8,

I realise this is a bit late but it might help others who are facing similar puzzles..

http://www.portforward.com

It's a damn good site,,
The routers section is fantastic, it lists most routers and holds your hand while guiding you through setting up port forwarding.
