How can I implement a caret on Linux?

For example, on Windows I use CreateCaret API call to create a caret, SetCaretPos to place the caret wherever I want.

How can I do this on Linux?

monoproject.org allows you to program using c# and vb.net on Linux, although I'm not sure if that'll fix it.
