That's really interesting.

There actually was an episode of Mythbusters dealing with this topic. They tested the theory that today's fast CD drives (52x and up) could in theory spin a CD fast enough that the CD itself would lose integrity and fail. On the show, they were never able to achieve this though.

The fascinating bit was how they simulated the failure, using an "overclocked" motor from an angle grinder or similar tool, and with a high speed camera, simulated CD particles embedding themselves in human flesh (again simulated).

Probably one of the better episodes if you ask me.

Any damage to the drive itself?

Rauko 05-18-2004 05:04 PM

Heh, not yet. As you can see, I haven't got all the bits from inside the drive :X Lol ! Ah well, I'm gona open it up later, clean it out properly so it doesn't get damage. You didn't know how scared I was when it happened ! It was like BOOOM! and I like jumped back like AHHHHHH WTF!?!?!? I thought my comp as gonna blow... I'm such a wussy...lol

LOL

Yeah I saw that episode of mythbusters it showed that the CD would wobble and then just break in pieces it was good. Too bad it happened to you.

Doesn't fit anywhere? Well, your thread definitly isn't a Linux success story. Non-Linux threads are suitable in General, not a Linux Success Story forum....

/me saw that episode to

didn't they say the reason why they couldn't get the drive to spin fast was because there computer couldn't process the info on the CD, and that means it had to spin slower (kinda makes one think that faster cd-rom drive doesn't mean faster read)
