Management
people who pay wages always get paid more than the peasants who earn it

programming is one thing, but add accounting or management to your cv. after all, who earns more - Bill Gates or the plebs at the bottom writing his crapware

So what are you interested in?
Pay depends on area. You could get a general idea by going to job boards and looking. (somewhere like http://dice.com )
You split out all the C++ and C jobs and I doubt you are going to find a clear cut definition on a job posting. DBAs typically will make more than the admins. (at least most places I've worked).

Typically the more mission critical and specialized and harder you are to replace the higher the wage.

It's hard to say if you know something you will make $xxxxx it just isn't how things work. I've seen ads in the paper where they list qualifications as 10 different programming languages, 3 different OS knowledge areas, 10 years of experience and a wage around $8/hr.

Depends on where you live, but those german SAP guys really kill me. They sell you a million dollar software package that's so convoluted you then need $150/hr SAP consultants to run it. Whatta racket.

In software, it's definately the fix it consultants that make the pennies. In hardware, I've known ccie's that pull down a few grand a week(one guy i know from vermont made 23000 dollars in 5 days last year!) just to come in and remodel a network. I'm also friends with guys who do the SAN repairs, and they make nice salaries too. But most of those jobs are contract, short term, and spaced out. On the other hand, they only have to work a few weeks every year. Software, I'd definately go with dba's or something of the like, you'll get longer terms and decent money. Of course you can always stay in one job and take vacation a couple times a year for good money.

The people who program shaders and such in 3D animation (special effects) are paid quite well by the companies, such as pixar... There are few of these programmers who write scripts...

But, for this you'd have to know the 3D animation software, be kinda artistic, and know the 3D animation software's scripting language (for maya its MEL)

The problem is that the highest paid stream will change a lot.
SAP is pretty good, although for the future security is good prospect IMHO.
I know someone at work who 20 years ago, was offered £1,000 a day using mapper (that must be the same as £4000 or 7000 USD now).
Nowdays of course mapper skills would not get £100 a day I guess.
Try to go for something that can not be sent to India !

I've heard that network security admins working for large companies can earn at least $200,000+ a year! Now that's a job I wouldn't mind too much....

While I certainly think that security is a job on the rise I also think that programming games is a good paying job. Look at how well the guys in DOOM3 are doing

They have John Carmack; he imo, is the only reason they do as well as they do.
