High speed downloading here I come!!!

Woohoo! I just got off the phone with Comcast, and after three years of sitting on ATT's waiting list (burn in hell AT&T) I am finally going to be able to ditch the dial-up connection. Cable internet here I come. Woohoo. Sorry but I had to share this, as I have been stuck on dial-up for decades....:p :p :p :p

I'll never go back to dial up. About a year and a half (maybe 2.5) I switched to DSL at 768/128 and have never been happier. I crawl on dial up, and after about 5 minutes give up and log off. I cannot go back now :D

Congratulations!

Cool

Broadband rules. It's always connected, no dialing up. Wheneve I go to my friends house and we go on the net for something with the 56k it crawls so slow. Did you ever try downloading an iso with AT&T, that would probably take a while.

As someone who had to switch back from cable to dial-up it royally sucks. I'm back on cable for the mean time :)

Indeed it does. I downloaded a Slackware ISO back when I had 56k. IIRC, it took a combined total of about 22 hours. :) With DSL, I recently got all five Red Hat ISOs in about six hours.

Cable internet is a blessing. Fast, less expencive, no mom screaming at you for the high phone bill.

annehoog 04-02-2003 06:12 AM

except when you local cable company doesn't provide it and adsl is way too expensive because you have to pay 30 euro to the isp plus 18 euro's per month to the phone company b/c they claim that you can't use adsl with have a phone ascription, but since I have a cellphone I don't even use that phone connection! So I'll be d....d if I pay for that.

(So I'm stuck with dial-up at 56K and 3 eurocents per minute)

w00t. congratulations. i remember the endless phonebills
of when i used 14k4, 28k8, 33k6, 56k6, isdn64+128k modems
at home.. then came wonderful adsl :)

The worst part of my dial-up connection is the old phone lines in my neighborhood. The fastest speed I ever attained was 32k. Cable internet will cost me about $50 US /month. Although I am usually broke, I will gladly pay it. Heck I pay almost that much already for the extra phone line etc. Try running a squid server serving two people at the same time on dial-up, and you'll give blood to get cable. :-)

I was going to get a house with some friends on campus next year, but the houses don't have T1 (and no DSL in the area yet), so I instead oprted to get a campus apartment instead.

Sure it won't be the same as living in a huge house that will have parties every weekend but hey, I need my T1! I constantly fear what I am going to do once I graduate from college... I just hope that wherever I go, it's somewhere that at least has DSL!

I am on a broadband connection, and will not even touch dialup. In fact, I never had interent until broadband was available.

I have no patience... and by that I mean literally. I think it takes to long for my system to boot (about 20 seconds). I actually have to check to make sure cable interent is available to any area I may move to because I will not settle to dialup.. EVER!

Now, now, you guys are killing me! I only used dial-up all my life, but thats cause ADSL was not available where i lived. Now, i subscribed for ADSL, but since Italians are so freakin' fast in setting things up, i'll get my ADSL in 2005. I call the ADSL provider every day to bitch at them for not connecting me yet, although i payed already, but they just say it should be done in a few days.. it's going on for two months now...
Plus, my phone bill is astronomical, and my dad makes me pay for it, and i have no money to, thats why i can permit myself only 5-6 hours of net a week... Bah, hopefully i'll be on ADSl soon... and even then i have to pay 50 euros a month!

Ah man, I remember my first morning with a cablemodem!

This was a few years ago and I was still a windows user...I downloaded the latest netscape package (I think it was 4.7 or soemthing) which was 29 megs and I watched that progress bar FLY!! (I think I got it in like 60 seconds or something...)

"Whoaa."

I don't care how broke I am, I will NEVER give up my cable modem :D

trickykid 04-02-2003 11:21 AM

Yeah broadband is a good thing..

I once downloaded StarOffice 5.2 about 2 years ago in about 4 minutes.. its about 100 megs. The funny thing was on same connection with a Windows machine, I downloaded the same package and it took Windows about 10 minutes to download. :)

Comcast is my hero!

I am also taking this time to install RH 9 on my server and workstations. I will only keep windoze dual booted on my laptop for school. Other than that its all penguin....
