hardware specific distros

hi
I have had an idea it is probably rubbish but.... A while back I tried installing a few linux ditros on an older pc and fell over again and again with various problems till I got mandrake slack and puppy to work however my modem proved to be a problem with all of them in the end after lots of heart ache mandrake worked and I am most happy with myself. However during this it struck me that live cds are an excellent development as you can test you hardware without installing and with a distro like puppy you have you config and setting saved to disk as well. I must add I am no hacker just an ordinary bod with a pc.
My idea is this a distro that installs and a utility that outputs a hardware specific installation for others with the same hardware set up. So those more informed can leave there version, for there hardware for others to use. The idea can extend to the software set up too so you can find a distro that works on set up A and is preconfiguered to be web sever or a sound studio or whatever you could then build the pc to fit the distro !!!!
The main problem I can see is the detail needed for the hardware but surly this can be sorted in software and generated with the read me.
I would imagine this is all possible now but a distro that de-teched the job with a good windows like gui would offer linux to a wider user base.

So shoot me down in flames

Cheers
Phil
