I want to be able to play halflife(counterstrike) online soon. my friend's computer surpassed the reccomended requirements but was choppy. does any one have any idea how well a computer like this would run it?

-233mhz amdk6
-80 mb ram
-28 k modem
-1 mb video card 65 hz rfrsh rt(i'll probably get a 16 mb card soon.)

that would help

also, does anyone know if sierra makes a linux version of halflife or counter-strike for linux. i remember seeing linux servers on the list for counter strike games.

thanks alot

NO WAY

I'm afraid if you do run halflife on that spec its gonna do a maximum of 10fps. and with all the latest updates for a halflife it runs even worse.

The minimum i would say would be: -
500(Athlon or PIII)
128mb RAM
no lower than a voodoo 3 or TNT 32mb
56k modem (not freeserve)

I have k6-3 400
128mb RAM
Geforce 2 GTS
Cable Modem

and it runs barely. you get the jerkiness in large battles.
Cable modem rules though.

Any lower than a 56k modem and the ping will be too high

relative

depends on what you consider playable...

-i have a celeron 433 (the older, slower things
with 66mhz fsb)
-164 MB ram
-Diamond Viper 770 (TNT2 32MB) (Detonator 5.22, DX8a)

the game runs pretty smooth in 1024x768x16 utilyzing OpenGL

the game is more or less configured default with standard poly models and a low decal count (mp_decals = 20)
Optimizing the connection settings in the config.cfg is critical as the defaults are not really good.

Tweaking guides can be found on most HL related sites.

The framerate gets really low when there are crowds (6+) on the screen or someone throws a smoke grenade (EEEEEK 10fps)
but the average is around 30-35 (wich is ok but not really great)some people consider framerates below 99 (maximum displayed by HL) as unplayable but thats plain stupid.

I consider my system to be in the lowest range of boxes that can run CS with accepteable performance.

try to go with openGL since neither software nor D3D are HL native (maybe D3D was optimized in the latest releases though)... HL=modified Quake1

a 28k modem is absolutely not great for playing (you will lag like hell, as smurf already stated you will at least need 56k or ISDN)

Regarding the Linux version... its just to run servers, its not the client binary (see www.counter-strike.net)

hope it helped

well at least halflife runs fine.
i guess ill have to upgrade if i want to play counterstrike on-line...

oh, my friend actually got cs to work good on his
pny 233 mz processor
64 mb ram
and 56k modem
computer by "downgrading" to windows 95 and buying a new 3d video card

the only thing is that it lags sometimes but not too often
