GNUStep as a Viable Desktop

I recently ran across the web site for GNUStep and am very intrigued by it. I was very impressed by the NeXT when it came out and had felt it should have done better, and I was impressed that it is still around via the OpenStep spec and apparently MacOS X.

I have heard criticism that Linux suffers from not doing much different than Windows on the desktop. Both GNOME and KDE are excellent in many ways, but they do seem to be designed very much along the same paradigm as MS Windows. I have seen several articles on the Web touting MacOS X's user interface, which based on my casual observation is similar to GNUStep.

It seems that GNUStep has the opportunity to provide both an excellent user interface that is different and still looks good. Also, it is written in Objective-C, which is what Apple is using.

On the other hand, I find relatively little information on the Web regarding either GNUStep or Objective-C, and the GNUStep web site does not show much in the way of activity.

So, the question: Why this lack of interest in what appears to some great technology?

Any response is appreciated regarding technical merits, usability, etc.

Thanks!
