Gmail account blocked !
 

hey i have been using gamil for about 6 years.This thursday morning, i use my account.do the usual stuff of email checking
then in evenign, when I open i get this error

Account temporarily disabled
To immediately restore access to your account, enter your mobile phone number below, and we'll send you a text message with a verification code.

Google Accounts: I'm getting a message that says 'Sorry, your account has been disabled.'

i really dont want to give my Mobile no to Google. (privacy reasons, they gatehr enough info already )

Anyway the solution is to dump google chrome, gmail and any service other then google search.

Yup, I heard you can't even make a new gmail account without giving a valid telephone number. F'k google ! I'll quit using it.

so any thoughts ? how do i get my account unblocked? i dont want to give google my number, even if i switch now, i will have to change where emails are sent to me on sites like lq etc, and some of them will requrie confirmation by logging into gmail account :(

The only thing I can think of is you e-mail google, or you call them like they say. Sorry, but Google is evil.

Even if you could call, wouldn't that defeat the purpose? They would have your number the second the connection was made, so you may as well just hand it over.:doh:

furthermore, are phone numbers used as unique identifiers -- IE, the "screen name issue" that really became an issue in the late 90s, wherein the user must seek the deepest depths of originality or obfuscation to create a unique screen name. --- Every time I let a customer choose his/her own credentials, I would inevitably hear "DAMNIT, and OH COME ON!" as the he/she pounds away with his/her unoriginal screen name and password.

Yeah, you can try to enter a fake phone number, but I'm thinking they want to confirm it using that phone number.

Would it work to buy a prepaid card and register using that? If all they want to do is send you a verification code (probably to see you're human and really want to get the account back), it shouldn't require you to have a "permanent" deal, just a number that can be used once. Or if they don't fancy prepaids (and can somehow detect that?), grab a new phone contract, do the job, then cancel the phone thing -- you'll probably have to pay for one month, but it's not much. Remember to review the agreement before signing, though, so you don't get hanged for two years :)

well the thing about providing gmail a number is that here any network prepaid or post paid requires you to give your national ID card's copy to the network provider, so if someone really wants to know where you live,how many phones,bank accounts etc you have , your family info etc. a phone number is plenty.specially the way our telecom companies handle this info .

Yes there is the IP well there are 3 major cities in our coutnry , all IPs are seen as either of those, so NO they dont know my city, its not that I am hiding somehting ,but i think that just corsses the line of privacy big time

I never put where I live on the internet, for many many reasons, who knows what kinds of psychos and goons are out there on the net just waiting for you to give them some info about you. I put as much incorrect info as I can about myself.

Well, good luck getting your account back, maybe you should consider switching providers afterwards.

I keep a current tracfone just for this purpose. It remains off, cost me about $40 for a crappy phone, and I put $20 on it every 30 days. This is the number I give anyone I don't ever want to talk to again. ;)
