When watching a youtube video, if you point to the lower bar and right click, you get a menu. One of the options is "Get video URL at current time". I chose it and, then, a little box appeared in the middle of the screen showing the URL. All right. Now I cut and paste the URL and give it to youtube-dl. After it finishes I play it with mplayer but, unfortunately, it begins playing from the very start. Anything wrong with the web browser, perhaps?
Thanks odiseo77. Well, anything that comes into the machine the machine can capture it. At the time of those posts the youtube function I spoke of (GUI) was not implemented, as is plain from the fact the person who replied the OP was a developer.
Anyway, is ffmpeg some program current in Linux distributions?
