"Fun" project?

*SIGH* I was just rejected from google's "Summer of Code" program, so I'm now looking for some other project to put my energy into. I would like to find something I can work on... something kinda fun/interesting to work on. Unfortunately, being a college student leaves me with a lack of funds to buy hardware, as much as I enjoy playing with new hardware. All thoughts are welcome.

If you're in it for the experience, and you can do without the $4500, try http://www.enlightenment.org/

It's going to be huge - now that it's out of freeze, there's plenty going on. I'm still a beginner, but it's the type of project that would get me into development.

HTH,

Andy

An interesting proposition (and I can do without the $4500, not that I wouldn't prefer it, of course. ), but I would probably like to look for a project I do use (not that you could know what I use).

why not put your time into the project anyway? Granted, yo0u won't get $4500, but why not give it a try? Wanna describe your project?

Well, the project I had applied for was to revamp the version detection code in Nmap. Unfortunately, I was not the only one. Someone else was actually selected to do this exact thing, so I'd hate to duplicate/conflict with their work.

Well, even without programming experience, there must be things you have wanted programmed, or thoughts you have about programs. Or ideas for a hardware-based project, if it's cheap, lol.

Well it may be more than you want to tackle but I think we can all agree that CUPS stands for Crappy Unix Printing System.

I really don't have any thoughts, and this is your project. I'd be willing to help, but I don't wanna control it. It's your project

How about a NDISWrapper-type thing for printer drivers?

Why not buy a kit like this one
http://www.oatleyelectronics.com/kits/k164.html
or this
http://www.oatleyelectronics.com/kits/k090.html

and write a linux based control programme for it
you know, like turn some lights on and off
by remote control
or by a timer or something

hope this helps
floppy

edit
here is another similar kitset just waiting for you to write a linux control programme for
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVie...Max=&SUBCATID=

I like the ndiswrapper idea. But why not extend it to all types of drivers. Obviously you'd have to start small, like perhaps...modems?(I need to get my win modem working in linux). Other ideas?

The easiest of those projects would probably be the printer driver approach: printer drivers are the only ones that exist entirely in userspace, after all.

LOL - I'd be eternally grateful to anyone that can get my Dell AIO922 printer working with Linux...
