Free Artwork: Public Domain or CC-BY-SA?
 

There is a question I've been struggling with lately: I periodically release free artwork, and by "free" I mean "free" in the sense of "anyone can copy it, change it, distribute it, and use it for personal and/or commercial purposes". I can accomplish this with either or Public Domain dedication, or a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) license, but often I am undecided on which to use. I like the CC-BY-SA as it keeps derivative works non-proprietary (theoretically) and points some attention back to myself (the attribution part). But on the other hand, I am concerned that CC-BY-SA will prevent people from using the artwork in a lot of common applications (e.g., cutting and pasting it onto a poster or mixing it into a scene) because they don't want to relicense the entire work. Does anyone have any good arguments either way?

[Note: Please stick exclusively to the original question. If you happen to hate the idea of artwork being free, please don't start a huge flame war that will get my thread closed.]

I don't know if it would ease things but as copyright holder the CC BY-SA allows you to waive any of the Attribution and Share Alike conditions?


You should feel free to post without the need to say that. The fact this is the /General forum does not mean members should wilfully derail or destroy threads. If unsure just report the offending post and ask a moderator to look into it.
