free apache webspace needed
As the topic says, i need a free apache webspace provider. I searched the net for some time now and decided my linuxquestions friends would know something. I dont mind about the domain.
cheerz ps. i have considered the idea of having apache running on my box but i need my bandwidth. |
I don't know whether your post is classified as advertising or not.
Nevertheless I'll take my time to answer it. It's very very difficult to find a 100% free webhosting with features like server-side scripting support, database support and more space than 10 or 20 MB. I searched for a long, long time and couldn't find one. The problem is even free webhost providers have some kind of catch: they either provide ads on the site and/or impose file size limits, usually disable FTP access, usually do not allow files other than HTML or images and place *severe* restrictions on bandwidth. If you want a personal home page, then you can make do with free providers. If you want (as I suspect) more support like FTP, Database, PHP/Perl and lots of space and bandwidth, you must go for a paid hosting. There are a lot of low cost, full featured hosting providers. A search on google will get you heaps. Do a lot of homework before you select a webhost: Look for:

EDIT: what kind of a website are you planning to make? |
A google search on "free apache web hosting" threw this up:
http://www.propercomfy.co.uk/ See if that serves your purpose. |
ftp, i dont mind ads as long as they r not pop-ups, domain looking somethig like www.domain.com/~oxide or www.oxide.domain.com . I need apache because i just need to have space where i can put stuff that i and friends can access from difference places. The files wont be more than 10 mb (just in case i want to put a song there). Thanks for the help and fast responce m8 :) .

So you want FILE sharing thing, and not space to host a web site? Why didn't you say so in the first place? :)
|
ok.... what do you suggest i should use?

Check this out for some options on disk space on the net:
http://www.freewebspace.net/guide/diskstorage.shtml Also Yahoo! briefcase: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/ Apache is a WEB server. So I assumed that you wanted to serve web pages. Don't ask for Apache space. That means you are asking for web space and not for storage space on the web where you can share files with your friends. The two concepts are totally different. |
im sorry but the free storage service providers there r either not free or simply dont work. FreeBack is definetly not free. Sharemation is not loading. I dont know swedish to use tiomeq. Village photos and yahoo briefcase r the same links. Znail is definetly too small and doesnt load. Do you have any other lists of storage providers.
|
Doesn't Yahoo! briefcase fit your needs? Isn't that free? It's got about 30MB storage space... What else would you need?
|
as i said before i need apache. Yahoo briefcase is not really an apache. I cant use ftp to upload stuff on it.
|
You don't need an Apache server for uploading files via FTP. What you need is an FTP server which is different from an Apache server. Apache serves *web pages* for *hypertext* content and is *not* a file sharing utility.
Please get your terminology right first... Why don't use peer-to-peer networking for sharing files? That way you don't need a central server for your files. Try googling for peer-to-peer tools and you'll get a lot of them. |
i found what i needed thanks anyway :)
