first car suggestions?
 

I put this thread on corvette forums website...just seeing if anyone here wants to help me!



Ok I came to the conclusion....that the 88 monte carlo SS isnt what I remebered it to be....Originally I wanted this to be my first car, however I saw an old monte carlo yesturday...it wasn't what I remembered...this one was really long and the front grill looked horrible! It may have been a 70's monte carlo, which may be the case...but I don't think I'll ever find a perfect condition monte carlo LS or SS 88!And when I do I'll be going off to college!!!And all I'll be doing is pumping the car up and stuff instead of saving for college...So I started taking notes on cars I want....What I like is well....Pontiac Sunfire!

I saw a 99 with 130,000 kms on it for 5500$ canadian...That sounds really good to me! And because they are plentifull...finding a deal on one that's in good shape and even possibly the GT model....that'll be easy!

I also think a 92 to 94 mustang will work, but we have only discussed the 89 model on this board.

Civics are a n0-n0, every second car is a civic or a honda of some sort

The dreaded VW.......Jetta! How much are older models? 800 kms per tank seems real good to me...30 k for a new one...way too much!

I promise you'll never hear from me and wanting to get the best possible first car again if I can get this resolved now!!

Toyota Prius at 2004 or later. Second generation Hybrid engine. Faster than a gas powered at initial start. Doesn't need to rev up. Gas mileage is better than a civic even though it is a 4 door sedan. It is fairly cheap with tax encentives. They pay you between 1 and 2 thousand to buy it. Price at around 20K without encentives or rebates. This is what I would recommend if you want to save money on gas, and have a decent looking car with some room in it. YMMV.

If you are a student get something cheap. (real cheap)
I'm not a big fan of GM cars. My brother in law had a Grand prix and the repair manual actually recommended removing the rear engine mount to replace the spark plugs.:rolleyes:
The sunfire probably won't have the problem because it's a 4 cyl. but take a good look for stupid stuff they have done. Read the reviews, visit the typical web pages like kbb.com and edmunds.com and search your local classifieds before buying.
VW is not something I would buy new because of the initial purchase price, but they make good cars. Around here about the cars that are about 2 years old sell for almost half of new.
The mustang would be a fun car. I got a thing for rear-wheel drive. Insurance might be higher though.

I usually do most of the work on my cars so I always look at things like where is the oil filter, drain plug, spark plugs, distributer, how much room is around the engine, and general appearance.

go with the fox chassis mustang (79-93) dood... they are great first cars.. trust me ;) and get a 5.0 not the wimpy 4banger.

no cars 97 (ok.. most all cars) and up have a distributor ;)

One of those OBDII deals. I'm still messing with cars from the 80s.
As for the Mustang Fox chassis... Stay away from the 79's (trust me). ;) Maybe it was just the auto mine had in it, I would go for the 5speed if I were to do a stang again.

And just because we're talking about mustangs have you seen this?

Ever rip apart an 88 Monte Carlo?

Haven't ever messed with them. I know the SS has a 305CI motor in it and they are rear-wheel drive. I also think Chevy stuck them with an Auto transmission too.
My first car was a Chevy Monza with the 305 and a 4speed in it. Fast little car. Not too bad to work on but it was bare-bones, no AC, No power brakes, no power steering. Single belt on the front turning the alternator and water pump. Great little sleeper my Dad and I put in the motor.

Used 427 with 40,000 KMs on it....how much is a good price (canadian)

I live eat sleep cars. I am the friend that will not hang out with you just so I can rotate my tire's using my newly purchased 3/4" 5500 RPM 900 ft-lb 9.5 CFM impact wrench. I also believe turns were meant to be taken sideways (you haven't driven until you are able to pull a 70+ mph 270 degree on a counter bank). Anyway, here's a few a few tips if you want a vehicle that can go fast in more than just straight lines. (By the way I have beaten 5.0 Mustangs in my now deceased '89 carburated 4-banger Corrolla. It's all in the turns and your skill level. Driving in straight lines is for beginners).

MOST IMPORTANT!! Look for Rear wheel drive vehicles. You can always put more power through the stock RWD systems than you can through economy FWD drivetrains.

Light is agile. Light is quick. It takes less power to move and, more importantly, less power to stop, a lighter car.

Learn why a flatter power band (traditionally Toyota) is better than a higher horsepower peaky power band (traditionally Honda).

My choices are mostly Japanese. That's because I believe a stock motor should be rev'd to 8K on a regular basis in stock form and still last close to 200K miles. My beloved Corolla will testify to this.



My choice:

1 - 1984-1986 Toyota Celica Supra - my other deceased baby. Oh the good times. (5M motor seems a little weak, but the power-to-weight ratio is awesome, and it has a nice flat (read: good) power band. A turbo'd 7M mated to a W5 tranny drops right in. [ drool.... ])

2 - 1983-1986 Toyota Corolla GT-S (impossible to find. Don't knock it if you don't know why)

3 - Stingray Corvette's with the split rear window. I have always loved these.

4 - Grand National. Yeah right. Try to find one of these. Not a chance.

5 - 1986-1992 Toyota Cressida. All the power of a Supra, nice big back seat :P I'm currently on a search for one of these.


Of course, cars are like food and beer. Everyone's tastes differ.

Buy what tickles your fancy, but remember, you will always have more fun with a car that's cheap and is RWD. Some people think drifting is foolish. Other's think drag racing is a bore and need more excitement. Others, well, they're just amused by shiny things and think more stickers will make it go faster. Like life, you need to find out where you fit in among those groups.

Ive got a 1983 yugo for sale, Theres no engine, Transmission, Wheels, Windshield, or passenger door oh and its missing the hood ornament but you should be able to find that anywhere. You can have it really cheap if you want it.
