Does anyone here compile their own Firefox to optimise it just that little bit more? Aside from gentoo users since emerge dumbs it down a lot, Mozilla source has a lot of config flags, does anyone go for broke with these or just build basic versions or download binaries?

Binaries for me, but I had to compile it for FreeBSD a few weeks ago.

I've compiled Firefox and even the Mozilla suite before with various optimizing flags set, but the speed increase wasn't all that much more noticeable. For my own use, it wasn't a justifiable difference and the time spent compiling and getting everything right wasn't worth it IMHO. That's my own experience with it though, for others it may very well be worth the time investment. I guess I'm just happy with the provided binaries which are already i686 optimized :)

I use the provided Arch binaries which are i686 optimised as well, I was just curious because a mate uses a pretty mucked around with version on Windows and he reckons the performance increase is incredible... No windows bashing please, just wondering if it's the same in linux :)

any way to update the browser w/out having to redownload the entire installation? I have a dialup modem at home, and I'm not interested in continually downloading something that will change very little

It's certainly possible with Firefox. It has an update notifier but I am not sure if the latest update itself has been enabled coz I have already downloaded and installed the full version.

One of the "news articles" that dropped into my inbox about this, pointed out that there's a long time issue with doing an update, i.e. it's not perfect and might not work.

they suggested a complete re-install is the best/safest/most reliable method of doing that.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear (though I believe the whole thing is about 4.X megs in size).

regards

John
