Financial model of linux

I am just too curious about knowing the financial model of linux. Can people/organisations earn from linux? Where does the money come from ? Canonical Ltd is giving away free ubuntu CD's, including free shipping..how are they able to do this?

Redhat, Novell.. IBM... HP... and countless others make money off of Linux and other Open Source projects... it's possible, with the right marketing.

The product may be free but support usually isn't...

Support is free at LQ!

But you're right. Official support by several vendors such as RedHat, SuSE and Mandrake are not free. They work on that model of "paid" official support.
