Filthy linmodem behaviour & panic button query

I've got two questions here ...

I've installed and used this modem driver before, and always found it reliable - ltmodem-5.78f (for kernel version 2.2.22-16) but recently after a complete system reinstall (just becuase I'm lazy about deleting stuff ) , when I connect up, the screen freezes. The whole X windows system freezes. No terminal. No nothing. In fact, RH Linux freezes and I have to do a dirty reboot by pushing the panic button.

Any ideas why ? Is there something I can do to stop this filthy behaviour?

I usually use the Gnome desktop. I haven't used KDE much, so it could be Gnome's object request architecture with linmodem drivers that's guilty (?).

My other question:

What can hard reboots damage? I would guess it's the inode structure, but is there something other than the /usr Desktop directories that could be backed up?

thanks
Bert

it's probably got something to do with the driver - there's a 6.00 out for the ltmodem at heby's site - i don't remember the address offhand... you'll need to wade through linmodems to find it.

Could also be something REALLY weird like its giving it a different virtual port this time..That happened to me in windows and caused all sorts of trouble.

Yeah, thanks - downloaded the newer version last night.

I got the 6.00b4 (it's actually 2.2.16-22 I've got - these smalll numbers!) version and installed it and after editing the /etc/modules.conf, and the wvdial.conf, I got a connection, but sometimes it still comes up with "Failed to activate interface" message when I try to dial out.

It's wierd because I never had any broblems with these drivers before and now they seem to be very hit and miss about activating.

dj_relentless, can you elaborate on the misallocation of virtual ports? Do you mean the COM ports ?

Thanks for your help. Maybe it's just a cross I'll have to bear. Any ideas about my second question?

Bert
