Arrow Favorite data compressor


i myself like Winrar most, using .rar format, but i woant to know what other people like. also, if you reply try to post a compresson comarison if you can to back yourself up

From what I remember 7-zip has more tweakage wrt compression compared to rar giving slightly better compression ratio at the expense of using more CPU/RAM. Rar has some compression value tweakage but ads recovery volumes. Bzip2 beats Gzip but needs more RAM AFAIK. Basically I'll use whatever I think is best for the job as long as it isn't platform-centric (OK, except cpio) with bzipped tarballs as default.

gzip... bzip2... never even heard of winimp.

I voted for 7-zip. Of the free (7-zip is LGPL) compression programs now, it probably has among the best compression (it uses LZMA by default), I think. The POSIX version is here: p7zip; most distros have a package for it.
