External sites linking to website

Looking in cPanel for my website, I see that quite a few external websites link to it, many obviously betting or porn (I have not clicked on any of the links). A malware scan of my site came up with nothing.

Firstly, why would they do this, and secondly, is it worth blocking them?

When I was blogging, there was a someone with a domain vampirestat dot com that was linking to my blog. It was known as referer spam and by clicking on the URL or going to that URL meant more traffic was generated to that domain.

Probably the same case here?

I think it must be something like that. I also wondered if it was an automated search for sites containing blogs or forums (mine doesn't) so they can spam them. Some sites have accessed my site multiple times though. I'll probably block the domains when I get time.
