Etta James' "Roll with me, Henry"
I heard an interview on NPR today with the late Etta James. At one point she was talking about her song "Roll with me, Henry," and it's more popular adaptation "Dance with me, Henry." She said something to the effect of "Roll with me? That wasn't going to fly with these [1950s US] white people ... they were like 'roll with me? How does one roll with another?'"
So it got me thinking. What is the "roll" part of rock 'n' roll mean? Does the roll mean to dance as the adaptation transliterates -- or to hang, to be cool, or what exactly? If you ask urban dictionary, it only really deals with the reference to using Ecstasy.
Anyway, Etta James was fun to listen to speak -- very cool, and in re-listening, I'm really enjoying her music.
