I ain't far ahead of you, dude. 5 years living here and I can still only converse in a simple manner with at most one native speaker, and am always having to ask them to speak 'despacio' (slowly). (By the way, I just violated 2 rules of standard English in this paragraph. Did you catch both?)

Back to the art vs. science thought, I often comfort myself by saying that since I'm a left-brained person, I don't do so well with right-brain artsy stuff like verbal communication. Perhaps as an analytical type, the same applies to you (??)

If you break rules they're not the ones top watch out for.
I am very bad at interpersonal but I do like language, which seems odd.
