email abuse

How is it possible for someone to use my email address - with a prefix that does not exist, ie admin@admin.com - with a virus attached, and a return path as editor@admin.com ?

I receive several of these every day.

Thanks

Email headers are incredibly easy to forge, and there are very few restrictions on what goes in what field. Its really a trivial task.

Yes, never look at the email ID. If in doubt, look at the IP address and the server source.

I actually get a lot of spam from my own e-mail ID. There is nothing surprising about it.

Most spam filters actually trash messages where the IP is spoofed or there is a doubt about the originating server. At least most spam filters should do this.

Never trust the sender ID. When in doubt, view the full message source to get an idea about the actual origin including server IP address.
