Drugs, drugs, drugs.

The 3 main drugs in a "civilized" society:

1. Alcohol. 2. Coffee. 3. Nicotine.

Their purpose in society:

1. Forgetting. 2. Rushing. 3. Oxygen Starvation.

All three can only be equated to brainwashing?

Which ones would you, or could you give up? :-)

Man, what a sad life I live, don't have any vice :)
Many people in a civilized society use the food as a drug to replace alcohol in accomplishing the purpose nš 1.
[...] I guess I was a little troubled boy.

EDITED, ok remains down there unless trickykid erase it. Sorry, I have a bad day, it make me forgot some of the rules; thanks for remind me that.

Anyway I've used hard drugs, heroin and coke; and two softies regularly for two years. I guess I was a little troubled boy.

runnerfrog,

You may want to keep some of the information you are providing to this forum private as this forum and site is accessible by everyone and we should not discuss illegal drugs on this site, treat it like religion and politics, just doesn't belong on a technical forum.

Regards.

Well, caffeine I have cut back on... dramatically. Still, I indulge daily.

Alcohol... that's a couple times a week. Sometimes less, sometimes more... but not too often. And then there are those special times of the year, when alcohol flows like wine... hmm, that analogy fell apart there. Those couple times a year are the ones which make you look really bad if you take the "Am I an alcoholic" quizzes.

Nicotine... just over three months now (quit second week of December)... and I miss the little things fairly often. Pipe/cigar/cancer-stick... doesn't matter... just a taste... but NO... I won't.

Caffeine, Probably will always consume. I like coffee.
Alcohol, Once or twice a month I'll go out and have a whiskey at the Bar.

Nicotine... ahh nicotine, how many ways do I hate thee!
I can't think of a single thing about Smoking that I like, yet still I do it. I'd give it up in a heartbeat if I found the willpower.

I drink coffee, I drink beer, and I smoke cigarettes, pipes, and cigars. I don't have any vices.

oskar 03-18-2007 04:58 AM

That's easy. I drink less than once a month. But I need cigarettes and coffee.

Likewise. And I wish I had a GF\Woman in my life to satisfy my other vice.... :D

rocket357 03-18-2007 05:13 AM

Hrmmm...

Gave up alcohol already, so I guess that's out of the question...

Coffee or cigarettes? I'd have to say coffee would be easier for me to give up. I quit smoking for 3 months (took a "vacation" called boot camp to do it), and like a moron I started smoking again about 15 minutes after I got off the plane back home...doh?

I appreciate good coffee, but I'd have to say that nicotine is a requirement for me...sigh.

Valkyrie_of_valhalla 03-18-2007 07:02 AM

I don't know if I would call these brainwashing...
For me:
1. Alcohol (one beer every 2-3 days, occasionally wine, vodka, whiskey, etc) - makes you feel more relaxed, makes you sleep better at night, makes you feel better (well, as long as you consume it in moderate quantities :D ). It actually helps me get my job done, especially if I have a long boring homework in front of me. Don't think I could or would give it up :)
2. Coffee (3 cups a day, an energy drink once in a while) - good for keeping my head on my shoulders when I have lots of work... Well, I should reduce it a bit, but nah...
3. Nicotine (10 cigarettes a day). It also helps me concentrate and focus my attention. Also, it's impossible to give up, although I want to reduce them a bit...

I say they are not brainwashing, but actually help you learn and concentrate...

BTW, did I mention I was 18? (yeah, I know, I'm gonna live a "long" life :D )

I find the use of the term "alcohol and drugs" amuzing. Like alcohol isn't a drug?

When I was in high school I went to a party where a guy had just slammed a small bottle of pure grain (190 proof) and subsequently passed out. We rolled him over on his side before leaving to go get a pizza, thinking he might regurgitate and choke. Anyway, long story short, when we got back from munching he was dead. Died from respiratory arrest or, in other words, he overdosed on booze.

If that isn't a "drug" I really don't know what is. The continued tolerance for alcohol and the people who abuse it is inexcusable, immoral and just plain wrong. Maybe we need a "war on booze" to set things straight. Zero tolerance for beer drinkers and mandatory sentencing: "drink six beers, do ten years." And it needs to be a felony too so boozers can't vote and screw things up again. :o

I'm sure proponents of the "tough love" philosophy will recognize and enjoy the smell of their own sh1t.

oskar 03-18-2007 11:51 AM

I'm sorry to hear that.
It definitely is a drug, but I don't think prohibition is going to solve anything - like we didn't try that already.
It's kind of misleading. Pot gets demonized as a gateway drug, and you can advertise alcohol on TV. I worked in a rehab center for alcoholics for a year. A couple of people I worked with died in that year. It's a dangerous... But I think everyone should have a choice... And kids should be educated about the real risks... not those stupid anti drug campains that leave you wanting to mainline heroine.

phantom_cyph 03-18-2007 11:55 AM

Lets see, alcohol and nicotine (given I don't drink or smoke). Caffeine is a whole different thing...
