Drawing ASCII art

I have seen some excellent ASCII artwork on this forum. How do you create them? Is there some special editor which makes it easy to generate ASCII pictures or do you "draw" them manually with a text editor?

I'm asking this, since there are a few libraries in Linux for ASCII art and so I thought it would be interesting to know.

While it's a really old DOS program, the results can be amazing.

Ascii art, so cool ;)

Here's a web interface for turning jpg, png,or gif images to ascii art:

I'm sure more could be found with a search. Also, for more ascii fun, check out the AAlib or libcaca video output drivers for mplayer, to watch ascii movies...

That link was cool, Bulliver! Thanks! :) It's amazing what you can achieve with a combination of characters...
