How do I actually get my hands on the files... All Linux downloads seem to assume I have the internet and ask me to enter a url into Linux to get them.

How do I download the files with Windows (and then open them with HH when I take my flash drive home)?

The more comprehensive the answer, the better, but all helpful responses are welcome. Kthx.

If you mean packages as in updates or new packages: maybe you could run your distro booting from a Live CD overthere? Or maybe install virtualization? If you can't install software: QEmu for instance doesn't need any "special" rights. OK, OK, you miss out on the "kqemu" kernel driver speeding things up but at least it'll run...

ok, from your title, you are talking about apps, so I assume that you are talking about stuff on the same level of firefox or mplayer or OO.o. if that is so, you should be able to go the site from any computer, download the source or packaged version and put that on the thumb drive then install/compile them on your Ubuntu box. Also, Ubuntu has on their site, a list of all deb packages that are in their repository.

they should show all dependencies that are necessary to install the package. I haven't used this method in a while as I use aptitude/source for my programs, but I think it might download all the dependencies in the deb file.
Any one that knows that is wrong, please comment so the correct information can be shown.

with no network connection on the linux box then the ONLY way is to dl them from a different computer and put them on a thumb drive or dvd

I guess (this is just me exerting my imagination) you could create a clone of your system on a USB stick , use that to update/install while you are on the internet and make sure that the downloaded packages are saved in the var directory. Then, when you get home, you can recycle those packages to be used on your home computer. As long as the stick and your home computer are in sync, you won't have to worry about dependency issues.

Just download the application onto a USB drive from a machine that has internet connection - and then use the installation files to install it on the PC that does not have access to the internet. As Simple As That!

Err, I need someone to hold my hand through this. See, when I try to download linux versions it just gives me a URL that I need to copy somewhere in Linux to download the files.

Anyway, I brought my linux box here today, so maybe I won't need to figure this out right now.

Wish I could just change .mp3 to .ogg ... don't need the internet for anything but getting my music to play. At least for now.

And yes, I did start about this issue in another thread but I figured that since I referenced Windows I should restate my problem in General.

every music player( A/V program) i have on fedora plays mp3's
why do you need to convert them ?

and HH ships with all the codec's , right?

No, RythymBox won't play .mp3 files. And the wireless network here isn't showing up for my linux box so I don't know what to do at all, now. People are telling me to save the files to my usb drive and then open them in Ubuntu but I don't see any way to get the files anyway.
