Does size matter?

Does anyone know why the most common and recent floppy diskettes are 3.5"x3.5"? Who invented it, and why did they choose that size?

This question was proposed to me by a friend of mine, and she let on that it had to do with the personality of the person who invented it. What kind of a person would make something like this? What kind of characteristics would this person have, and what would make them choose that size as opposed to the not-widely-used two/three inches?

It was suggested that I draw my concept of this character, and the answer should come right to me. Unfortunately, my mind isn't expanding quite as well as it should. Any ideas?

If size matters, then the inventor must be devastated by the floppy being supplanted by USB thumb drives ;)

Anybody remember the 3" Amstrad CPC disks? They were great! Very sturdy.

Yes!

After a while of googling, I've found that the 3.5" floppy was designed to fit in an HP engineer's shirt pocket.

A little bit of trivia for anyone, anyway. ;)

Floppy drives used to be much bigger - 8" a long time ago, and 5.25" later, then 3.5" after that. The main advantage to the 3.5" (apart from the higher storage capacity) was indeed that it could fit in your pocket

i still prefer 5 1/4 inches floppy disks , the problem is usually the abundancy of just in time supplies ... erh ... lets say the provision shop next to the coffee-shop ...

EDIT :: oops ... i got the size wrong ... 5 1/2 instead of 5 1/4

Even worse, if a woman reads this, she might say "But you always told me that was SIX inches!"

;)

women are great , they are rather good and efficient in "proper" numbering and their layers of details which we men tends to "overlook" with the pretence of "we men will only and always look at the bigger picture and we dont have time for the details , its your job" , indeed , the bigger the picture we men envision the better and more manly we are ... nah ... women sometimes are the only capable one(most probably the last one that lastly stay behind) who are able to pull men's feets down to earth instead of floating and dangling above the ground at an too early stage in men's persument of being an ultimate winner ...
