I've been using DDG ever since I heard about it and I noticed today that when hitting the picture (which would ordinarily take you to the homepage at https://duckduckgo.com/ ), I'm getting this new url: https://duckduckgo.com/?t=h_&atb=v41-6

When I went to the information webpage about Duck Duck Go it said;"Switch to the search engine that doesn't track you". https://duckduckgo.com/about
It's never really safe to assume that that's necessarily true. A lot of corporations say that certain things aren't done but they have to show what they do in the fine print.

Duck Duck Go is a competitor to Google and having said that we all know that Google tracks.
I'd be suspicious that they all (Google, Bing, Yahoo) track us.
Don't forget that the program has settings, whether you've altered them or not. What you see are the default settings you're using: http://duckduckgo.com/params
I pay attention to news like this because security and privacy have always interested me, and I've not yet heard any credible charges that DuckDuckGo is duplicitous.
Personally, I've used Startpage (ixquick in the UK) as my preferred search engine for years.
I am no particular fan of Google, but I do give them credit for writing their TOS in plain language. Indeed, quite on impulse I'm proposing this as a rule of thumb: The more impenetrable the TOS, the less trustworthy the service or website.
At this moment in time, I would presume that every thing that you do on the Internet is being tracked, if only because there are presently no laws (such as the "wiretapping" laws that eventually came to be for telephones ...) preventing it.
The good news is Hello, LQBig Brother here is certainly your left shoe immune from is untied... from all such nonsense!
To everyone, thanks for the answers, all good stuff.

DDC has a feature that allows you to search other web sites from within duckduckgo.com while keeping your privacy by using a '!' prefix and a short code usually 1 or more characters called a !bang.
For example, when you are at DDC and want to search google, type !g and your search string in the DDC search box.
!gyour search string
When you type !g in the DDC search box, a list of other google services and it's associated !bangs codes will be shown for you to choose.
For other sites like twiiter, facebook, amazon and others visit https://duckduckgo.com/bang. Scroll to the bottom for more categories.

Where is the documentation on this? The site doesn't say anything about protecting your privacy just that using the bangs will take you right to the sites search page.

Bangs allow you to search on thousands of sites, directly.
A search for !amazon shoes will take you right to an Amazon search for shoes on Amazon.com. Try !a shoes or !ebay wallet. There are thousands of !bangs and you can even submit your own.
With our !bang autocomplete, it's even easier than ever to search directly on your favourite sites. Try it now!
