Do I need this?

I want to try to free up some space on my lap top. I got it for Christmas and it was a used laptop. It has lots of stuff on it that I have no idea what they would be used for or if I even need them, but I am afraid to take them off for fear of messing up my laptop. I was browsing through Add/Remove Programs and I saw something called Agere Systems AC'97 Modem. What is it and do I need it. Please put it in laymens terms because I know computers, but I don't know the ins and outs of them.

Also if it helps I have a Campaq nc6000 and I have a wireless router and a wireless card I put in my laptop to get internet

Well obviously you don't know a single thing about computers or their capacities. The fact that you have internet apparently still stops you from realizing that there is such a thing as Google.

will tell you exactly what that particular device in your computer does. From there it's up to you to decide.

I wish you lots of educational experiences with your laptop (you're going to need it)

Welcome to LQ....soon you will be asking Linux questions....

First, don't get upset by people who may have gotten up on the wrong side of bed and decide to dump on you because you are not as smart as they think they are.

You'll need to give us more details to get good help--eg size of the hard drive, how much is used, what OS, etc. Meanwhile, 3 tips:

1. If you're not sure what something does--and you have no way of re-installing it, then don't remove it.
2. If you don't have an install disk for the OS, be careful about changing anything.
3. If you have Windows, the best way to free up disk space might very well be to install Linux.
