Phono pre-amps match impedance. They amplify the signal near the source in some way like a tv pre-amp.

Basically you still have a cartridge (needle) that has some impedance on it. Each brand and each model had different impedance's that are way high. I forget what the one's I used to have were, maybe 28K ohm or something. Normal audio ranges from about 4 ohm to maybe 28 ohm. You won't get any sort of quality if you don't match all the inputs to the outputs.

jefro, the cartridge is a Rega Exact Mk2 moving magnet phono cartridge. The output is from 6.8 to 7.2 mV. I don't really know what that means, and I don't know the impedance. Here's a link - http://www.rega.co.uk/exact.html

What does "matching all the inputs to the outputs" mean in this context?

I apologize for the dumb questions. These kinds of things are in the realm of faith and magic for me.
