They call these realtime multimedia presentations. Infact, they are not pre-rendered. But they still are very cool things tiny in storage capasity consumed (
there are popular demos of 64kB, etc). These are
Demos from the Demoscene.
Bad thing: Demos I heard of are all only for Windows (what a waste!) So why not somebody start this on Linux. Although it wouldn't make lives easier for sys admins like us, I bet they are of entertainment value.
.theprodukkt site is a popular site containing related liks such as download links for other demos (Eg: Seven Heaven :-) They also provide a free
software (.werkkzeug) which we can use to make such Demos. They even have a miniature (in size),
3D game (.kkrieger) similar to Quake 3 for download (requires heavy metal systems).
I know the most of the information I know about
Demoscene starting from
this link. I got to see these things a couple of years ago. It was a 64kB Windows application which displayed full-screen animated scene for around 10mins that I kept wondering
how the hell they put so much inside 64k.
I'm not into graphics or animations. So there may be no point of me whining of not having
Linux native Demoscene. But I can happily enjoy if such was there. Although current things are limited to DirectX, I'm pretty convinced that Linux graphics can provide cool things and cooler (probably with
OpenGL, XGL or something else).
