Data recovery from memory card

This is for a family member. They had a memory card in a digital camera and have managed to format it, only to realise they didn't get all the pics off they wanted. I've been asked if I can maybe get any back.

What is the best tool for doing this? I'd guess it's formatted as fat32 but if possible I'd like to use a linux tool rather than a windows one because windows will mean installing software on the works laptop which they get a bit itchy about. Could do to be free sw as well!

Ta!

First thing to do is quit using the card. Then make an image of the card to your hard disk using dd. After that, I typically use photorec (which is part of the testdisk package) on the image file. If that fails, you can also try using foremost, but photorec is easier.

Yes, I've told her to take it out of the camera and make sure it's not used.
I've downloaded and installed testdisk but I haven't got the card yet - should be getting it soon.
