I have a clean Windows 2000 (yeah i know, but networking is networking right?) install on an old P3 450Mhz computer that is plugged into a Network Hub that is plugged into a single port router using DHCP. The NIC is installed correctly and is hooked up to the hub, but no matter what I do, I cannot get online/view the network. The lights on the NIC and Corresponding Hub port are OFF.
I have tried multiple cables, and multiple ports on the hub (other computers are on the network and it works fine with them). I plugged it into a different network that just uses a single Broadband Router and it worked fine, so I assume it isn't a problem with drivers or anything like that
There is no firewall on the machine, the only one is built into the router (Sonicwall Tele2)
Networking is networking but this is "Linux - Networking", Moved -> General
If you have tried using a cable that works on another machines then I would guess that the NIC is bad. Perhaps you could try a card from one of the other machines.
It is certainly funny that there is no link light. Have you tried a different PCI slot incase the motherboad is damaged? Do you have any pci slots that you know are working?
Well the computer works on a different network using the same NIC/Slot as always. I was online for a while actually with no problems (on the different network). It is only on this other network (the ony using a HUB) that it doesnt work.
It's honestly the craziest thing I have ever seen.
Is the NIC capable of both 10 and 100 MBit/s with autodetect? If the HUB is, say only 10 MBit/s, and the NIC only uses 100, then it doesn't work. Also, if the cable you use is twisted, then a new network switch can detect that, but maybe not an old hub.
Sorry if I'm just stating obvious things.
[Edit] Sorry, meant crossed cable, not twisted. Damn there are so many words in the English language. [/Edit]
