ok, i'll tell you straight off that i suck with hardware. so i kind of need help. the problem is that when i startup my computer, a clicking noise comes from one of the hard disks. i don't know why. i disconnected it, and everything was fine. but when i plug it back in, it makes this clicking noise. plus all these errors happen when i boot up my computer. anyone heard of this before?

Well depending on the errors, does your computer boot up into an OS at all, it sounds to me your hard drive is going bad, especially if it didn't make those clicking noises before. It might be the arm or head that is going out, not reading the cylinder or blocks right.

well the first thing strange is that during the first booting screen, it says "detecting Primary Master, Secondary...." and on. it never did that before. and the hard drive that clicks is the primary master. after it clicks for a little while, it is not detected. then after it detects the other masters and slaves, it clicks more and then says "floppy disks fail (40)" or something. then it goes to the next screen. here it is strange. if it didn't detect the clicking hard drive, windows loaded up fine. but if it DID detect the clicking hard drive, then it says "INVALID SYSTEM DISK, REINSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" or something like that and windows won't start. also, i don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the green light that means my floppy disk drive is in use is always on....the people i have asked before have never heard of it, but thats alright. i was planning on getting a new computer since mine is a piece of trash. but thanks anyways.

It sounds like you have a dead HD. My sister had a HD which kept on clicking, and would never get passed the INVALID stage. In the end it had to be a new HD because it never worked. Could be a problem inside, in which case you wont be able to get around it.
Try http://www.pcmech.com and their forums. They have some excellent hardware people their, who know almost every piece of kit around. |
Okay, if it has a warranty, send it in to get fixed, that is if the warranty covers most of it, if not, dump it, buy a new one...doesn't sound like its worth keeping, but hey try that site out CragStar mentioned, they might have a better solution, but me, hardware that doesn't do its job for me and gives up, gets thrown out the house.

I hate Hardware which doesn't work, cus usually you dont know when it is broke, it costs money to replace, and it soon becomes out of date!!
BTW, I dont think there is a problem with the floppy drive, cus my light stays on until it comes to my GRUB OS loader. |
cool cool. thanks. i'm always on the lookout for advice. i'll be sure to come back here with more problems.

Floppy cable
The floppy drive light being on and the 'floppy disks fail (40)' is something I am always getting when I stuff around in the guts of my PC's and put the cable to the floppy drive around the wrong way.
Flip the data cable so that the red edge (pin 1) is on the other side and see if your floppy problem goes away. I have had the clicking HDD problem before, but only after I dropped the HDD onto concrete, as you can guess it was up the creek. |
