Competing with M$'s billions

OK, we all know that Microsoft’s current selling point is their R&D investment. How is Linux supposed to compete with Microsoft’s billions?

Lots of Linux developers develop for love rather than money.

It's like musicians, I have met more great musicians that made no money from their music that were better than professionals making a living from music.

I have found that true in lots of work.

Like yo momma said when she was bakin cookies, the secret ingredient is love.

The way I look at it, Linux doesn't need to compete with M$. Linux is Ferarri, M$ is Ford Motor company. They are the same product (cars/OS'es) tailored to different markets. Ferarri doesn't care how many cars Ford sells, because they sell to different audiences.

Linux is (at least in my mind) the Ferarri of OS'es. Microsoft can sell as many station wagons as it wants, I'll stick with the sports car.

Moved: Discussions of these sorts belong in the General forum as the Linux - General forum is reserved for Linux Technical questions. Regards.
Also take a look around the forums, this is discussed quite often.

Read Neil Stephenson's, "In the Beginning Was the Command Line" for the anology between cars and OSs. . .

The Cathedral and the Bazaar will give you an idea of how the wild and woolly world of open source works.

what you say about my mama?

Microsoft is like our government trying to solve problem. Their main way to try and solve a problem is to throw money at it, and hope for the best. The results are using way less than adequate. Linux, on the other hand, is not developed for money. So the 'nix people have to become inovative in how they solve problems. That means they use their head, education, and, like said above, sheer love of problems solving for the hell of it.

Linux seems to be doing well competing with Microsoft. Apparently it is doing too well because now organizations like Microsoft, who are losing, are trying to drag Linux down.

Every see a drug addict? They can make meth and extsacy(sp?)from the shit under your kitchen sink. Love drives ambition to the sky, while being paid to do a job, well, its exactly that.
