First let me introduce myself. I run a very small computer service business. Kompukraft Systems. My forte is taking old or obsolete machines and making them run like new again. I have been doing this since 386 machines were 'state of the art'. Recently I acquired a Compaq LTE 5280. I was trying to install (Hold your breath!) Win2K. Well as you know Windows can really do stupid things but this time I did something stupid. I accidentally pressed the F6 key and engaged QuickLock.

Well since the machine was a 'scrapped' unit - I found it in a gaylord full of other machines, including a G3 iMac that also worked - I have no way of finding its former owner and getting the password. Thus I contacted HPaq (Ha, ha!) and they suggested to reset the pulling the clock battery and then changing a jumper setting to reset the CMOS.

No Luck!

So here I have a machine that was running fine until I goofed and hit a key I shouldn't have hit. Does anyone have any suggestions? The machine ran so well I was considering keeping it since I can't afford to buy a new laptop and all I need is something to access the net as I travel.

Help. If someone knows the answer but feels funny answering it I will provide a notorized statement of ownership.

See if this works: remove the CMOS battery and the battery pack and the AC conn. Connect AC back and boot.

Thanks for the reply. Still no luck. There must be some jumper or other 'thing' that resets the QuickLock.

You know, if people weren't so darn 'sensitive' to the treatment of crooks, we wouldn't need things like 'quicklocks'. Ayn Rand stated that if we failed to punish persons who break our laws we only end up punishing ourselves. Consider that in many cities around the globe lawabiding people live behind bars and otther security stuff to prevent criminals from disrupting their lives. It's the same with our computers. We must add security devices etc. to prevent criminals from 'profiting' from their ill-begotten gains.

We shouldn't need anti-virus, anti-spyware anti-anything running upon our computers but because of a few people we all suffer or go to great expense to protect ourselves from crime and criminals.

I'm beginning to think that the only one who probably knows how to disable quicklock will be a computer thief! You know well that he will want to fix a machine just so he can get something for it. We must start punishing the evil doers.

Tried removing the CMOS battery, restart wjile holding reset etc. Even let it sit without batteries or power.

Help!! There is a way to overcome quicklock but everyone must think I'm a thief or sometthing for asking. I own a business and recycle old machines - www.thedailyshow.com. Come and visit.

I hate to tos out a nice machine like this but it is old and by the time I reset quicklock generations of machines will have come and gone.
