change tux logo

I move that the famous "tux" logo should be changed to something more shiny and attractive, mainly in response to the famous bsd devil logo being upgraded recently.

This could get serious, tux is old, sober and hasn't got laid in years (yes, that goes for me too!)

Surely you jest!

Motion opposed!

Tuttle 11-27-2005 08:08 AM

a change is as good as a rest!! It's the only reason I can think why most people haven't at least tried a distro or two....

Ok, I am half in jest, this has probably been suggested before countless times on irc anyway:)

I like this this one

I hope no one tests or uses Linux because of Tux, they should use it for the million other reasons.

I oppose changing the logo, it's fine the way it is. And why would anyone use Tux with a cyborg as the default logo.. that's nothing new, just the regular tux with something awful slapped on him..

Unfortunately people see the logo before trying it, to me a tux logo gives the impression (to me) that it was slapped together in someone's shed in their spare time.... hang on, it was!! (j/k)

lol I have to agree, I'll have to get on gimp and actually contribute something viable to this *bad* idea

So, how is Tux worse than an Apple or a wobbly Window? At least it has the virtue of being friendly.

Tuttle 11-27-2005 03:36 PM

I don't know, perhaps it is because it is a soft suddly thing, an apple is not soft or cuddly and neither is a window thingy.
An apple strikes you as food for thought, like Newton's apple falling maybe.
Windows is a pure abstract aesthetic thing - light comes through a window.
Tux on the other hand is a dumpy and doesn't even look you in the eye! Perhaps a fractal-ish shape or something to reflect the beauty and complexity of linux?

XavierP 11-27-2005 04:02 PM

And yet the penguin is both known and easily identifiable.

So, tell us, why do you think slapping a cyborg outfit on the existing tux would draw more people to Linux? Also, last time I checked, not all Distro's use tux as their mascot.. Redhat, Suse, Slackware and many others..

And who cares if a logo was slapped together in someone's shed, I recall Apple got started in a garage...

That my friend, was a joke.
I didn't mean to upset anyone by poking fun at Tux! It's a great mascot, really. Perhaps it shouldn't be changed _because_ it has become so familiar. I don't know. Just a thought really, I'll sleep on it.

Tux doesn't look professional enough for a logo (reasons by Tuttle). I'm for getting a new logo.

XavierP 11-27-2005 04:54 PM

All alogo needs is to be able to stand out from the rest and to be something that is easily linked to the system. Everyone knows that Tux = Linux. It works.

Maybe you're right... [see my edit above too:)]

XavierP 11-27-2005 05:05 PM

Because of the nature of Linux, I doubt that it would be changed. The time at which it could have been changed was when Linux was less popular - and at that time no one really cared :) Now that Linux has become more popular, Tux is far more widely known and accepted.

Mega Man X 11-27-2005 05:28 PM

I think Tux should be replaced by a very attractive female teen. It does not matter if it can dance or sing, just looks attractive and can do some light frontal-nudity.

EDIT: Wait, this is a Linux forum, sorry, I thought it was a MTV discussion :)
