Just remember: when stories like these finally strike the air-movement device "break wide," people will still not know the truth. But, they will never forget that they have been lied to. And that's infinitely worse, because any lie or half-truth will become gospel, and will be acted upon.
It will be that last look that your "ex" gave you, before starting the process of becoming your "ex."

No-one will care. They all walk around with a device that broadcasts their current location to anyone that bothers to listen.
Then they jump on social media and confirm it.

i don't like to paint reality black, but this is just so true.
and when confronted with the realities about google, android & co, the usual answer: "ok, but i don't really have anything to hide."
fools.
Well, you can but probably you shouldn't (if you've got one of these IoT things). On a very slightly off-topic note - if that has any meaning for 'General' - you shouldn't trust your door bell, either.
It seems that this whole 'Internet of Things' thing is going through a bit of 'Wild West' phase, where everybody is rushing to make something of a land grab, and putting off worrying about, eg, security, until later. If this doesn't tell you something about being an early adopter, you probably have to make a painful mistake, and learn that way.
I'm with jefro - my place is dumb too.
My TV connects to the 'net when I tell it to, so I can check for firmware upgrades.
But I'll have to build a decent firewall for the LAN so I can drop all packets for this crap that is coming. Win10 just arrived in the house, so that is a bit of a motivator.

this.
i've been saying this about the internet for years.
me, personally, i would welcome protective legislation.
privacy solutions only go that far, to make it stick you have to change the law.
