california road trip -redwoods

This is a question to all you folks who either live in california, or have recently visited.

We're going to be taking a road trip to california, and among other things we wanted to check out the famous (infamous?) redwoods.

But it seems there are two routes: Muir Woods NP and Redwoods NP.

Redwoods NP is a lot more north, than the other, but I wanted a second, third, and fourth opinion. Is there any significant difference between the two, and if so: which one is better?

Also, since the title is "california road trip", any other suggestions on cool places to visit are more than welcome...

So where are you coming from?
How far do you want to go?
How long have you planned for the trip?

Check out the Southern Oregon Coast...Coos Bay, etc...Very senic coastline.

Quietguy - Your right about Joshua Tree, I was stationed out at the marince Corps Base in Twentynine Palms - great park to go to if you're into rock climbing

Check out my "WWW" button below for some wilderness photos. Many from Yosemite or Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks.
Both have Redwoods.

hi blinker its me the <sed> guy we meet yesterday

Morning Blinker ...

sorry i had to find u out somewhere so had no other option than looking for u .... i have a last thing for u .

every thing works fine as told by you ... theres another problem i didnt mention . its like if my org log file loooks like as shown below:

RNFR "RNFR welcome.txt" /root/http/myfiles/welcome.txt
RNTO "RNTO hello.txt"

we need to change the file name from "welcome.txt" to "hello.txt", but the code we are using to change it ... which looks like this:

sed 's/RNFR.*RNFR\(.*\) \(.*\)/rename \2 \1/g' | sed 's/rename.*.\"$/&removethis/g' | sed 's/.removethis//g'

will change the orginal log file to something like this:

rename /root/http/myfiles/welcome.txt welcome.txt

but this is not we want we want the file name to be renamed to the new filename ie the o/p should be something like this:

rename /root/http/myfiles/welcome.txt hello.txt

not rename /root/http/myfiles/welcome.txt welcome.txt

you know what i mean????

thanks for all the help & sorry again for posting this query here ...

where r u ?

Oohhh.. I strongly recomment 2damncommon's idea of seeing Yosemite. That is one of my favorite places on Earth.

Also on your way out here check out Zion National Forest in Utah and Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico, (mild detour).

But seriously, you can't come to California and not see Yosemite.

I must contest the suggestion made by fmfnavydoc. I live in CB. It's nothing special, even Bandon is a little scruffy...drive up north about 15 miles past Gold Beach. That's where all the beauty is....then turn around and enjoy the view. spectacular. If you are in northern california, the trees of mystery is fun. (but I like the schlocky touristy stufff).

There are some really nice trees at Muir Woods but it gets very crowded and trampled. However, its in a very convenient location (about 30 min. from S.F.)
The further north you go, the better the redwood experience is. Less people and nicer trees. The best redwood trees I've seen are way north at Jedediah Smith, Avenue of the Giants and especially Simpson Reed Grove which was one of the most incredible places I've ever been. There are also some nice redwoods in the hills west of Silicon Valley between Highways 92 and 84. If you're gonna be in Northern California for awhile check out Bolinas, S.F., Santa Cruz and the Gold Country if you have time.

Update:

We actually ended up spending more time in Utah, visiting most of the parks there. Anyone who is heading that way: strongly recommend! Especially Arches, Bryce, etc. San francisco was a change of scenery from the parks (and yes, we saw yosemite), and we ended up taking highway 1 south to Monterey (anyone who doesn't know, this road goes right along the coast), but before that we also spent a little driving north of S.F. in Muir woods. Running a little short on time, we turned back after Monterey.

Almost forgot, we also drove through death valley - uber cool.
